The 3rds started their match against nomads 4 in a slightly haphazard manner in both attack and defense, and nomads soon took advantage of this, drawing a penalty against highbury to put the first points on the board. Things continued to go against highbury for all of the 1st half with nomads scoring 5 more goals to make it 6-0. And it could have been even worse for highbury as nomads won 2 more penalties, but luckily for highbury they missed both. Gordon was looking to recreate his success of the previous week, putting up shot after shot. Unfortunately he kept trying to forget all his troubles and forget all his cares by going downtown and things weren’t great when he was downtown, as the shots were just not sinking, both for Gordon and the rest of the highbury team.
The second half didn’t start much better with Lol doing a sneaky turn in the feed to score again for nomads. Craig came on early in the 2nd half and it seems coach Mo made the right decision as the attack started to flow better and recycle more ball. Jude started the highbury scoring off soon afterwards, sinking a mid-range shot to make it 7-1. With the other division of Nick, Conor, Ellie and Phil in attack Nick quickly made that 2 goals to highbury with a beautiful long shot from downtown. His celebration afterwards amused but somewhat appalled the crowd and had them wondering if they actually wanted him to score again or not. They soon found out as he converted a free pass and had the crowd averting their eyes as he proceded to show that all his eating and training for a second sporting hobby as a sumo wrestler was going well as he paraded around with his top up slapping his generous belly. However the fun was not over for the spectators. With Connor now in defense and seemingly hungover/still as drunk as a skunk from the night before, not that his manic running around, lapses of concentration and generally forgetting where he was were much different to how he normally plays, it was turning up smelling like a brewery that gave him away. Anyway, all that running around while seemingly still under the influence made him more confused than Lindsay Lohan on a night out with the Chippendales at G-A-Y and he actually forgot he was not in attack for a few seconds, putting a shot up at highbury’s own goal (to quote Connor afterwards in the pub: “I thought it was a perfect opportunity as we had a collect *hic* and I wondered why everyone was yelling nooooooo *hic* you were handsome, you were pretty, Queen of New York City, when the band finished playing, they howled out for more *hic* did we beat nomads then?”). Fortunately his shooting wasn’t as strong as the smell of alcohol reeking from his pores and he did not actually score the goal. Unfortunately Lol rebounded the shot and quickly took an easy shot under the post, score 9-3.
Nomads scored a few more goals but aside from Conors drunken/normal state of confusion the attack was looking much improved and they can be proud of how they finished the game off (or mortified in the case of Conor) and did not give up. Final scores nomads 12, highbury 3, the demon of drink on conor’s left shoulder 1, the angel of sobriety on conor’s right shoulder 0.
